CONFERENCE 2007 WILL BE HELD ON Thursday 8th and Friday 9th March
London venue to be confirmed
Further details will be available from 30th September 2006
The first World Music in Education Conference The first World Music in Education Conference held at Conway Hall on 3rd March 2006 was a storming success and was tangible proof if any were required of the need for such a forum of learning and discussion. The buzz of excitement in the building was palpable as the sounds of different cultures were heard mingling in the corridors. Discussion and debate were woven into the day and threads of conversation carried into lunch and breaks as musicians, teachers and arts leaders shared their passion for the work. Real multi-culturalism taking place live in an atmosphere of respect and understanding.
The 80 delegates that came from across the UK were a powerful reminder of the energy and enthusiasm for world music that exists in music services, individual schools and other organisations working with young people. The overwhelming response from those delegates is that they want and need more - more opportunities for hands on learning and skills development, more opportunities for networking and sharing good practice and more access to appropriate resources.
In response to this Musiko Musika is already planning the next London conference for March 2007 as well as regional conferences, extending the depth and range of sessions on offer with a particular eye on how the sustainable development of skills can best be supported. There are other development areas that Musiko Musika continues to work on in conjunction with the conferences, particularly the World Music Academy which will commence a pilot project for young people shortly.
Feedback comments from delegates...
"Lovely musicians, highly skilled in their field."
"The range of cultures included was excellent, especially the inclusion of English Traditional Music, which can be neglected in London. Also giving young musicians a voice - rarely heard."

"I enjoyed today even more than I had anticipated, and it served as I had hoped by introducing new ideas and resources that I can actually use in my day to day work - thanks so much."
What delegates plan to do as a result of the conference:
"Do what I do better and with more confidence."
"Incorporate my English/ folk music into our World Music programme."
"Identify as a management team what direction our Music Service wants to aim to in regard to World Music. Adapt practical knowledge gained within instrumental provision. Share my ideas to introduce world concepts to instrumental tuition to our whole staff."
"Incorporate new West african rhythms and Indian Raags learnt into the existing schemes of work. Introduce panpipe making into my school."
